John Green Obituary

John Green  97, of the Poplar Grove Community in McLean County, Kentucky died Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at The University of Louisville Hospital Burn Unit in Louisville, Kentucky with his family at his bedside.  John Gish Green, Jr. was born on September 21, 1927 in McLean County to the late John Gish and Locia Kittinger Green.  He was married to Wanda Jones for over 64 years until her death on November 21, 2020.

John graduated from Calhoun High School in 1945 and was the last surviving member of his class.  At the age of 12, he became a founding member of Pack Baptist Church and the last surviving founder of that as well.

In 1948 and 1949 he took his father’s combine out west and followed the wheat harvest from Texas to North Dakota, all at the age of 20 and 21.  In 1950 at 23 years old he joined the Airforce for over three years of service.  He was a gunner on B-29 & B-36 Bombers during the Korean War Era.

He then returned home to the farm which he did for the rest of his life.  He was in partnership with his brother Charles for a large portion of that.  It seemed as though he enjoyed operating a combine at Harvest, more than eating or sleeping.  He enjoyed that pleasure from 15 years of age, until he was almost 80.  The last time he sat in the operator’s seat, he was 93 years old.

In his last 10 years or so, he drove a John Deere Zero turn lawnmower practically down to a nub.  That was his “get-away” and he used it a lot.  He was still mowing on the day he went to the hospital.

In his younger days, he loved to hunt and fish and taught his three boys how to do both.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife Wanda Green, his youngest son, Bobby Green, a brother Charles Green, and his sister, Sue Brumley.

John is survived by two sons, Lance Green and his wife Stacy of Calhoun and Tim Green of Owensboro; granddaughter, Katie Green and her husband Davin Lawrence of Austin Texas; his brother, Jim Green of Ashland, Missouri; a sister, Nancy Jones of Port Charlotte, Florida; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, August 9, 2025 at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel with Dr. Richard Sams officiating.  Burial will be in the Poplar Grove Cemetery in McLean County.  Friends may visit with John’s family from 12:00 P.M.      The John Green family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Poplar Grove Cemetery Fund; P.O. Box 234; Sacramento, Kentucky  42372.

The Green family motto is “Never let the Truth Stand in the Way of a Good Story”, and Dad liked to tell lots of stories.  His last words a few hours before he died were,

“I’m getting old!”
