Bill Scott Obituary

Bill Scott  81, of Sacramento, Kentucky passed away Monday, August 12, 2024 at his home in Sacramento.  William Allen Scott was born October 5, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan to the late John H. and Margaret Montgomery Scott, was married to the former Margaret Frances Davenport on June 9, 1973 and was better known as ‘Bill’ or ‘Coach Scott’ to his friends and former players.  Bill was a man that lived and taught the five F’s and stressed that they should be kept in this order: Faith, Family, Friends, Fellowship, and Football.

Bill was a 1960 graduate of Holland High School in Holland, Michigan.  From there, he went on to study mechanical engineering and play football at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, South Dakota.  His first job after college was in San Francisco, California working for the NASA aerospace program.  After NASA landed the man on the moon, the space race was over and his career changed to teaching as he moved to McLean County, Kentucky in 1970.

Mr. Scott taught 27 years in the county and coached football for over 45 years.  With the help of the booster club and a passion for the sport, he was instrumental in bringing football to McLean County.  His first team of football players had never heard of the sport.  He coached and taught three generations in our community.  Coach Scott could tell folks the history of every team, game, and even the plays of each game he coached, and listeners may have even heard him tell those stories multiple times.

Beyond his passion for football, he enjoyed University of Kentucky sports, photography, watching track and field events, aviation with his love for flying, keeping up with politics, Ford Mustangs, anything South Dakota, and taking care of a few farm cats.

Bill was a member of Calhoun Baptist Church, where he served as the chairman of the Christian Life Center Building Committee.  Bill enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, and he was always looking out for those football players in need of a father figure to take under his wing.  He never met a stranger and enjoyed storytelling.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Addison Leia Mattingly.

Bill is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret Davenport Scott; a daughter, Ashley Mattingly (John) of Island; a son, Nathan Scott (Alexis) of Owensboro; a granddaughter, Calla Scott; two grandsons, Clark Scott and William Mattingly; several cousins, many friends, and former players.

A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Calhoun Baptist Church.  Private family burial will be in the Scott Cemetery in Muhlenberg County.  Friends may visit with Bill’s family from 3:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Friday and from 11:30 A.M. until 1:45 P.M. Saturday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel.

The Bill Scott family requests that expression of sympathy take the form of donations to the Calhoun Baptist Church Youth Ministry; P.O. Box 283; Calhoun, Kentucky 42327; or McLean County Football Boosters, Capital Account (for future multi-sports complex); P.O. Box 204; Calhoun, Kentucky 42327.
