Sandra Bedwell Wood

Sandra Bedwell Wood  75, of Owensboro, Kentucky, formerly of McLean County passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky.  Sandra Kay Bedwell was born December 6, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan to the late James Oacus and Pawnee Burchett Bedwell and was married to Ralph Douglas Wood December 30, 1962.  She was a member of the last graduating class of Kirksey High School in Calloway County and a Graduate of the University of Kentucky, College of Home Economics.  Sandra was a member of Worthington Chapel United Methodist Church in McLean County, a retired teacher from McLean County High School and worked with her husband, Doug for 35 years at Green Valley Farm Supply.

          For nearly 30 years she served in a variety of roles for Kenergy including chairperson of the Kenergy Board of Directors and Kenergy representative on the Big Rivers Electric Corporation Board of Directors where she served as chairperson.

          Sandra’s civic and community service to McLean County and Western Kentucky extends well beyond her roles with Kenergy.  She was the Executive Director of Leadership McLean County, a member of the McLean County Industrial Foundation and director and past president of the McLean County Chamber of Commerce.  Sandra previously served on the boards of directors for the Owensboro Mercy Health System Foundation for Health, Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, Kentucky Economic Development Cabinet Partnership, the Kentucky Industrial Development Council, Green River Electric Corporation, Owensboro Community College, and was the vice chairman of the Kentucky Tobacco and Health Research Board.  She was a board member for Green River Area Community Foundation, a volunteer for Hospice of Western Kentucky, served as the McLean County Campaign Chair for the Bush – Cheney Campaign 2000, a member of the Governor’s Task Force on Agriculture, served as an Advisory Committee Member for the Governor’s Scholars Agriculture Scholarship, and served on the board of contributors for the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer.  Sandra also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the McLean County Chamber of Commerce and was a recipient of the Charles Reid Citizenship Award from the Green River Area Development District.

          Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Doug Wood; two daughters, Andrea Wood (Erik Jessen) of Chicago and Susan Wood Cunningham (Neil) of Lexington, Virginia; and two grandchildren, Daniel Cunningham and Anna Cunningham.

          Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel with Dr. Tom Martin officiating.  Burial will be in the Worthington Chapel Cemetery in McLean County.  Friends may visit with Sandra’s family from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Friday and from 9:30 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Musters in Calhoun.

          In lieu of flowers, the Sandra Bedwell Wood family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Hospice of Western Kentucky; 3419 Wathens Crossing; Owensboro, Kentucky  42301.  Memorial contribution envelopes will be available at Musters in Calhoun.
