Shirley Cheatham Obituary

Shirley Cheatham  81, of Beech Grove, Kentucky passed away Monday, March 18, 2024 at her home near Beech Grove.  Shirley Jean Young was born November 5, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Arthur Allen and Christine Denton Young, and was married to Charles Ray Cheatham, Sr. on November 30, 1958.  Shirley was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother that was a beacon of joy and kindness in the lives of all who knew her.

In her professional life, Shirley was known for her skilled hands and warm conversation as a beautician for 15 years.  She later retired from Southern States in Sebree, where her hard work and dedication were appreciated by all her colleagues.  Shirley's commitment to her community was evident through her active involvement and lifetime membership at Beulah General Baptist Church, where she nurtured her faith and formed many lasting friendships.

Shirley's interests and hobbies were a reflection of her vibrant spirit.  She had a passion for quilting, an art she both practiced and admired.  Her quilts were not only beautiful but also a testament to her patience and attention to detail.  Shirley's love for travel often led her to visit her Amish friends, with whom she shared a special bond and mutual respect.  Auctions were another of her favorite pastimes, where she delighted in the thrill of discovery and the joy of collecting.

An avid University of Kentucky Basketball fan, Shirley's enthusiasm for the game was infectious, and she rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on her beloved team.  Her support was unwavering, and she enjoyed sharing this passion with her family and friends, creating memories during each season that would last a lifetime.

Shirley's life was a tapestry of love, service, and joy that touched many hearts.  She will be remembered for her radiant smile, her generous spirit, and the unwavering love she had for her family.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Sue Cheatham.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 65 years, Charles Cheatham; a son, Chuck Cheatham (Becky) of Beech Grove; two daughters, Mitzi Murphy (Paul) of St. Joseph and Holly Cheatham of Beech Grove; 8 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.
