Mary Virginia Boyken

Mary Virginia Boyken  87, of Livermore, Kentucky died Friday, September 4, 2015 at the Golden Living Center – Riverchase in Birmingham, Alabama.  Mary Virginia Underwood was born September 18, 1927 in the Livia Community of McLean County to the late Bernice and Sally Troutman Underwood and was married to Sherman Boyken.  Mary lived most of her life in Kentucky and was an avid Kentucky Basketball fan all of her life.  She graduated from Livermore High school and held a teaching degree from Western Kentucky Teachers College.  She taught first grade at Meade County School system for over 30 years and also worked with Head Start children during the summers.  Her family and all of her first grade and head start students were the pride of her life.  She was also a Kentucky Colonel.  Her last years were spent in Hoover Alabama where she enjoyed phone calls from her surviving brothers and sister, spending holidays  with her family and following her grandchildren’s progress through high school and college.  Mary enjoyed crochet and artwork and was active in her hobbies until the time of her death.  In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amy Renee Boyken; a sister, Grace Underwood; and a brother, W.C. Underwood.

          Survivors include two sons, James S. Boyken (Stephanie) of Brandenburg Kentucky and William C. Boyken (Sandra) of Alabaster, Alabama; three grandchildren, Melissa Boyken, Michelle Boyken both of Brandenburg, and Dr. Scott Boyken of Trussville, Alabama; a brother, Garnett Underwood of Livia; and a sister, Alma Tomes of Owensboro.

          Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel with the Rev. Clive Bell officiating.  Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Livermore.  Friends may visit with Mary’s family from 11:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. Monday at Musters in Livermore.
